Assignment 1: Research

 Assignment 1: Research

1. Lee Friedlander has a specific approach when photographing New York’s streets. His documentations of “familiar” things became popular due to his techniques of framing and incorporation of shadows and lights. The contrast between black and white motives is another attraction for viewers’ eyes.

    New York City, 1966

    New York City, 1963

These two images are taken in New York City, both of them representing figures of women and men walking down the streets. Photos are of black and white colours and both of them are centered. The photo of 1966 is centered on woman’s figure and another of 1963 is focused on a door handle of building’s entrance. Both compositions are very interesting, because they air the familiar street-walking in a new light. First photo shows men’s shadow on woman’s back, which suggests the succession of streetwalkers. Second photo pictures a man entering the building, while a woman exits it. Similar to the first photo, second photo shows the sequence of streets’ passengers.

2. Walker Evans pictured people from roadside stands and cheap cafés, advertisements and smaller town main-streets. He is well known for his accurate style of photography, since most of his photos are centered and show the connection between its elements. There’s a mere balance of lights and shadows, which makes his compositions appear elegant and crystal-clear to the public.

    New Orleans Houses, 1935

[Rural Church, Beaufort, South Carolina], 1936

Both of these images are of black and white colours, centered and symmetrical. They are reflecting the architecture of twentieth century; first photo shows the constructions of Orleans’ Houses and second a South California’s rural church. Evans gives a new look to something familiar for his century’s audience: buildings’ architecture. Looking on both of the photos, the viewer could notice the balance shadows and lights and the perfect centration of houses. Architecture appears to be beautiful and classic, due to photos’ regulated frames and smooth contrast of black and white colours.
